Abbey of Lorsch – Competition

Seating concept “Chairs for stones!” for Klahn+Singer+Partner, landscape architects and participators of the competition.

After being nearly destroyed during the Thirty Years War the Abbey of Lorsch was used as a “stone pit” for the region.
As a “reparation” and a warm welcome to the visiors of the abbey, the residents of Lorsch donate a chair from their private property. Coloured monochrome and made weather-resistant these chairs will be installed on the area of the abbey.

Public became private. Privateness becomes public.

Stuhlhockerbank is a series of seating for public spaces that approach users and viewers in an extraordinary way. The dividing lines between different types of furniture (chair, stool, bench) are eliminated as the three types blend. The results are immobile constellations that express a person’s inner stance in the particular situation.

Over and above the pure purposiveness of a piece of furniture, the objects come with narrative elements. They seem familiar and yet at the same time surprising, enhanced by a sensual and poetic dimension.

Helge Grey and Yvonne Fehling won 1st prize at the competition “Architectural art, Fichte-Gymnasium, Karlsruhe”. Their concept will be realized in summer…

On the 29th of September 2007, following the plans of Richard Meier, the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck was opened. In different areas of the building, we have installed permanently a variety of different models of the “Stuhlhockerbank” as seating arrangement. The set-up of the furniture was specifically designed for the museum.
